VIGIA SYSTEM
Vigía is the system for detection, surveillance and visualization of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease) in wastewater. It is the largest analysis system in Spain and consists of: 289 sampling points; 15,000 km of sewerage network and the monitoring of almost the entire population of the Region; the quantification of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 by basins; the normalisation of results; trend analysis; data screening for quality criteria; spatial distribution by municipalities and districts and distributed analysis of results.
The detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater (which is deactivated) is a complementary tool for decision-making by the corresponding health authority. The analysis of the results of this work without taking medical data into account is not adequate. The results must be analysed with the appropriate precautions and with knowledge of the matter, since the quantification of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the wastewater is affected by multiple factors (pollution, flows, rainfall, extraordinary discharges, time of data collection...).
The sewerage basins do not coincide with the administrative divisions; therefore, the aggregation of results by municipality / district is indicative.
A single relationship cannot be established between the value of SARS-CoV2 in wastewater and the number of infected persons, since it will depend on the virulence of the infection in each patient, which means that, in Vigía, it is trends, not absolute values, that are shown.
Due to the necessary consolidation of data that is carried out weekly, it is possible that small modifications in the general curve will be made in the week after its publication.
VIGÍA MAP
The map shows a color code quantifying the importance of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 based on: the trend in each municipality / district (ascending, descending ...); the absolute value compared to the historical data for this municipality / district.
By clicking on each municipality / district you will also be able to see:
- Name.
- Date of the last validated analysis.
- Indicator of evolution of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater.
- Comparative value of the last data with respect to the previous ones of that same point.
- Classification of the observed trend.
Last update: 04/11/2024
Note: In periods of rain, the results in the wastewater can be affected by the dilution of the waters.
Given the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sampling frequency of wastewater related to SARS-CoV-2 has been reduced. Starting in April, the updating frequency of the presence map will be monthly.
However, a small network is maintained that, on a weekly basis, performs these same analysis as an early warning indicator and whose results will continue to be published in the weekly report. The reports that are uploaded to this website will have a curve that only represents these points of the permanent network, so the shape of the curve will vary.
