To guarantee power supply in 2018

• The contract covers the power supply for those companies comprising this group in the Region of Madrid, Lanzarote and the Canal de Isabel II branch in Caceres
• Canal de Isabel II is the company with the largest installed power in the Region of Madrid

The Canal de Isabel II group will allocate 79.1 million euros to guaranteeing a power supply to all its facilities during the year. The contract, which covers the supply to every company in the group, is divided into two separate lots.

The first lot, awarded for 57.4 million euros, covers supply to the facilities of the four companies in the Canal de Isabel II group in Madrid: Canal de Isabel II, Hidráulica Santillana, Hispanagua and Canal de Comunicaciones Unidas, as well as the Canal de Isabel II branch in Caceres. The term of the contract runs from 1 January to 31 December 2018, with the option to extend this term for one additional year.

Last year, Canal de Isabel II (the parent company of the Canal de Isabel II group) consumed close on 420 gigawatts/hour of electricity in the Region of Madrid. This consumption total includes all activities by the company, both supply (pumps, wells, consumption by drinking water treatment plants) and sewerage (consumption by treatment plants, waste water pumping, sludge treatment, etc.), as well as consumption by offices and the telecommunications and re-use facilities used by Canal de Isabel II.

The second lot of the contract awarded by Canal de Isabel II, worth 21.7 million euros, concerns the electricity supply to facilities operated by Canal Gestión Lanzarote, the company responsible for managing the water cycle on the islands of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. This contract has a term of 19 months, from 1 June 2017 to 31 December 2018, and may also be extended for 2019.

Canal Gestión Lanzarote has four desalination plants, 38 drinking water pumping stations, 1,200 kilometres of supply pipes and 300 kilometres of sewer pipes, 60 tanks, six treatment plants and five tertiary treatment plants for the production of reclaimed water.

POWER GENERATION FOR SELF-CONSUMPTION
Given the volume of electricity generation needed by the group, Canal de Isabel II has been developing initiatives in recent years to generate its own electricity by harnessing synergy processes with water management, such as microturbines on supply networks and at treatment plants; co-generation stemming from the treatment of sludge at the facilities in Loeches; hydro-power plants; and electricity generation from biogas.

In this way, Canal de Isabel II generated over 62% of the energy it consumed in 2016. At present, Canal de Isabel II is the company with the largest installed electricity generation capacity in the Autonomous Region of Madrid, with a total of 81.56 megawatts.
