The Community of Madrid has the lower consumption of still bottled water per inhabitant and year amongst all the regions of Spain, according to the Household Consumption records of the Transition Ministry for the Environment.

While the Spanish average is 59.4 litres per inhabitant and year, the people of Madrid only consume 16.7 litres per year. This indicates that the citizens of Madrid trust in the excellent quality of their tap water, supplied by Canal de Isabel II.

The water of Madrid undergoes a large number of tests and controls which guarantee a top quality service: every year more than 6 million tests are run on the drinking water, equivalent to one test every five seconds. These take place not only in the tanks and treatment stations but also at the source and all along the distribution network.

The vice-president of the Community of Madrid and chairman of Canal de Isabel II, Pedro Rollán, visited today the company's Central Laboratory for Water Quality, located in the offices in calle Santa Engracia in Madrid.

Every year, 24,000 samples arrive at the laboratory and more than 480,000 tests are conducted on the drinking water at different points in the distribution network (treatment stations, tanks, channels and sampling stations). These tests study up to 60 parameters, including chlorine, pH and conductivity, and detect any possible anomaly in the quality of drinking water.

16 laboratories belonging to the company analyse these samples on a daily basis, and more than 40 automatic monitoring stations send real time data on the quality of the water to the company Control Centre, located in Majadahonda.

The quality of the water at source from the reservoirs and underground springs is also controlled. Every year, 52,000 tests conducted on this water serve to monitor the quality of the supply sources and, moreover, to determine which water offers the best conditions at source for diversion for consumption.

These controls, combined with the environmental care of the area around the reservoirs and adequate maintenance and renovation along almost 18,000 kilometres of distribution networks, serve to guarantee that the water reaches more than 6.2 million people in Madrid who consume this water on a daily basis in perfect condition.

As part of the Strategic Plan 2018-2030, one of canal's strategic lines is to guarantee the quality of the drinking water with measures such as the permanent renovation of the network, protection of the supply sources and the promotion of the use of new treatment techniques.


Having quality tap water, in addition to saving on bottled water, offers other significant benefits to families. These include not requiring space to store bottled water, a reduced consumption of detergents and personal hygiene products, shorter food cooking times (with the associated energy savings), ease of at home (avoiding the build-up of limescale) and an extended service life for washing machines and dishwashers.

Avoiding the consumption of bottled water not only contributes to reducing the generation of plastic waste and preventing the environmental costs of the transport of the bottles or containers, but also implies significant savings for families. In Madrid, one litre of water costs an average of 0.0015 Euros, whereas one litre of bottled water costs an average of 21 cents, more than 140 times more expensive.

According to the same database, while each person in Madrid spends approximately 4.3 Euros per annum on bottled water, inhabitants of the Balearic Isles spend almost 24 Euros each year. The national average expenditure on still bottled water is around 11.85 Euros per person and year.

It operates 13 reservoirs; 78 spring tappings; 14 drinking water treatment plants; 17,556 kilometres of conveyance and distribution channels; 131 pumping stations for drinking water and 133 for waste water; 14,956 kilometres of sewage networks; 65 storm tanks; 877 kilometres of sewers and outfalls; 157 waste water treatment stations; and 588 kilometres of reclaimed water channels.
