The Governing Board for the Community of Madrid has been notified today of the award proposal from Canal de Isabel II for the contracts for the supply of electricity with renewable energy guarantee of origin certificates at the facilities of the Canal de Isabel II Group. The procedure, valid for one year, will be awarded for the total sum of 55,875,979 Euros, excluding VAT. The proposal must be approved by the Board of Directors of Canal.

The contract refers to the supply to the installations of the four companies belonging to the Canal de Isabel II Group in Madrid: Canal de Isabel II, Hidráulica Santillana, Hispanagua and Canal de Comunicaciones Unidas. The contract will be for one year, from 1 January 2020 until 31 December of the same year, although it may be extended for another year.

In 2018, Canal de Isabel II consumed a total of almost 460,000 megawatt hours of electricity in the Community of Madrid. Total consumption includes all the company's activities, both the supply (pumps, wells, drinking water treatment plant consumption), and the sewage system (consumption of WWTP, waste water pumping, sludge treatment plants…) as well as the consumption in all the offices, telecommunications and recycling installations.

Aware of the importance of this consumption, Canal de Isabel II has been developing initiatives for the generation of electricity using processes synergistic with water management. These include microturbines in the supply networks and at the WWTP, cogeneration from sludge treatment, hydroelectric power stations or biogas plants used for power generation. Thanks to these initiatives, in 2018 Canal produced 68 % of the electricity it consumed at its own installations. This is equivalent to the annual consumption of a town the size of Móstoles. This electricity generation avoided the emission of 77,100 tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere: equivalent to the annual emissions from 52,000 cars.

At present, Canal de Isabel II is the company with the highest installed capacity for the production of electricity in the Community of Madrid, with a total power of 107.1 megawatts.

CLEAN GENERATION PLAN - 0.0 KILOWATT HOURS

All the energy supplied to Canal in this contract must come from certified sources of clean energy: this commitment is part of the company's Strategic Plan 2018-2030. More specifically, the fourth line of action aims to promote environmental quality and energy efficiency.

The flagship programme of this line is the Clean Generation Plan. This not only supports the exclusive consumption of renewable or high efficiency energy, but also aims to convert Canal into the first company from its sector in Europe to produce a quantity of energy equal to or higher than that it consumes.

Canal de Isabel II was founded more than 165 years ago to supply water to the city of Madrid. It employs more than 2500 people working daily to provide a service to more than 6 million people in the region. It is an innovative company, a leader in its sector, and internationally recognised for its management of the integrated water cycle. It operates 13 reservoirs; 14 drinking water treatment plants; 17,556 kilometres of conveyance and distribution channels, 14,956 kilometres of sewage networks; 65 storm tanks; 157 waste water treatment stations; and 588 kilometres of reclaimed water channels.
